758. 556 The Elements in Black Water.

This is a book report on Joyce Carol Oates' 1992 novel, "Black Water", that contributes to the message of the book as a whole. There is the theme that life is fleeting, and that one moment we can be cruising along smooth roads, and the next we may find ourselves sinking into an abyss of black water. Oates makes it a point to hammer home the idea that Kelly is an "American girl", thus suggesting that the events described in the book could happen to the reader, or the girl next door. They could happen to anyone, at anytime. Next, is the theme of trust. Everyday we put our lives in the hands of other people, whether they are the pilot of a plane, a bus-driver, or a friend or family member in whose car we are riding, the same way that Kelly put her life in the hands of the Senator.

This is a book report on First Break All the Rules: What the World's Greatest Managers Do Differently. Authors Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman of the Gallup Organization set out to write a book that would not become obsolete in a year, a book with a simple but effective premise. To accomplish this, they set out to answer four questions: 1) "What will talented employees always need?" 2) "What will great managers always do to turn talent into performance?" 3) What are the enduring secrets to finding, focusing and keeping talented employees?" 4)"What are the constants?"(17). In order to get the answers to those questions, they conducted interviews with over 80,000 managers from over 400 companies of all types. They asked each manager the same twelve questions. They then took that information analyzed it and compiled it into a study. The result is their book, First Break All the Rules: What the World's Greatest Managers Do Differently.

760. 572 J.D. Salinger.

This paper discusses J.D. Salinger and why he is a respected but misunderstood American author of the twentieth century. . It is only fitting then, that his novel, "The Catcher in the Rye", is one of the most loved and most controversial books of the past fifty years. Atop the list of reasons for the book's controversy are those concerning its language and the moral decay it is believed to inspire. As a result, "The Catcher in the Rye" has, over the years, been censored time and again (even by it's own publisher), and placed on numerous "banned book" lists at libraries, and various institutions of learning all over the country. It would be pleasingly simple to chalk this censorship up to the dated values of 1950's America and the "Cold War hysteria" of the period, but this is not the case.

761. 573 Catcher in the Rye.

J.D. Salinger's, "Catcher in the Rye", is one of the most oft-read, and highly controversial books of the past fifty years. Among the myriad of reasons given reasons given for its controversy are those concerning its language and the moral decay it inspires. Fortunately, time and hindsight have taught society to see what lies behind the fears surrounding this book. The controversy, instead lies in the mere fact that the book shows not only alienation, which to a certain extent is understandable for a 20th century adolescent, but also in its realistic depiction of youth's disillusionment with their future in the Cold War era. Along with the disillusionment comes apathy and disrespect for authority, which Holden realizes, is as helpless as him to prevent the future.
