92. 212 George Friederich Handel: Under His Influence.

This paper summarizes the life and works of George Friedrich Handel. His influence not only on baroque has continued to resonate throughout the years. This paper attempts to illustrate his contribution and the mark he left on the world. George Friederich Handel is one good example of this. A look at the life of Handel illustrates both the mobility, and the influence of royal patronage on a composer typical of the baroque age. Handel's father intended him for the law, but his own musical inclinations soon prevailed. Following his studies in Germany and Italy, where he studied with Corelli, encountered and exchanged ideas with a number of other Italian composers, and may also have met Vivaldi in Venice on his return, he went to Hanover. There he was appointed Kapellmeister to the Elector of Saxony. The Elector soon became the King of England and Handel became successful in yet another part of Europe, London. Largely because of all his traveling, Handel was recognized in England as the greatest composer of his day.

93. 287 Meridel Le Sueur.

The topic of this paper is Meridel Le Sueur. Most of her published work is now out of print. But we should remember that she could often find at least one publisher willing to risk publishing her books, even during the great depression and the darkest days of House Un-American Activities Committee terrorism. This suggests to me how much she could tap the conscience of others, even a mainstream publisher, and insist that it act, despite the dangers involved. Meridel Le Sueur wrote (and rewrote) that she "was born at the beginning of the swiftest and bloodiest century." And she was: in January of 1900.

This paper discusses the life and work of Henry Morrison Flagler. Henry Morrison Flagler was born in 1830 in Hopewell, New York. At the age of 14 he moved to Bellevue, Ohio, where he would eventually meet and become a partner of John D. Rockefeller in the Standard Oil Company. By the 1870's Standard Oil would make both Flagler and Rockefeller very wealthy men. After all but retiring from the oil business, Flagler made his first visit to Florida in 1878 with his ailing wife, Mary. Mary died in 1881 and two years later Flagler married his second wife, Ida Alice Shrouds. The couple visited St.Augustine, and while Flagler saw the potential of St.Augustine for attracting tourists, he found the hotel and transportation facilities there to be poor. By 1885 Flagler returned to St.Augustine and began construction of the 540 room Hotel Ponce de Leon. In order to ensure proper transportation, Flagler also purchased the Jacksonville, St.Augustine & Halifax Railroad. This was the first of several railroad purchases Flagler was to make.

This paper is written about Clara Wieck. Her considerable concert career can be divided into three parts: between the years 1828 to 1840, she performed first as a child prodigy and soon after as an international celebrity. This kicked off the next period of her career, 1840 to 1854, in which she continued a grueling touring schedule despite giving birth to and raising eight children during that span, as well as dealing with the failing mental health of her husband. During that third phase of her career, Clara Schumann traveled the world, playing to audiences who had widely come to regard her as one of the top pianists in the world.
